Eating Right To Prevent Cancer

Did you know that up to a third of cancer deaths in the US are related to diet in some way or other ? This statistic has been released by the National Cancer Institute and it is backed up by other prestigious institutes all over the world

So, you are what you eat or to put it more bluntly, what you eat could kill you ! The other shocking statistic published after a telephone survey conducted by The American Cancer Society shows that the people who are most affected by cancer are those who are the most ignorant and less informed about what they eat and how their lifestyle will affect their chances of living a long and healthy life.

Chili peppers are hardly the first choice for an article on cancer fighting foods! Surprisingly chili peppers are getting a lot of attention right now. They contain a chemical called capsaicin which perform the very useful task of neutralizing nitrosamines which cause cancer. It has ben shown that in fighting stomach cancer, chili peppers (in moderation) can play a vital part.

Cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower are now well known allies in the fight against cancer. They contain a chemical that can change a cancer producing estrogen into a much milder version. This is particularly pertinent to breast cancer. In addition, broccoli have another chemical - called sulforaphane which can prevent colon and rectal cancer.

Even the humble carrot which contains beta carotene is at the top of the list. Carrots have a substance called falcarinol which has been shown to reduce the risk of cancer. Another vegetable which is a favourite of mine are avocados which contain powerful antioxidants and they can block the damaging free radicals which cause cancer cell growth.

Alcohol has come in for a lot of scrutiny. Some researchers regard it as a carcinogen and indeed , if it is consumed in great quantities, can lead to all sorts of diseases and damage the liver. But red wine, if consumed in moderate quantities, can help in the fight against cancer. This is because red wine has lots of polyphenols which are antioxidants. In addition the skin of the grapes contains resveratol which can inhibit cancer cells from multiplying.

Cutrus fruits such as oranges, grapefruit and lemons contain monoterpenes which can expel carcinogens from our bodies and therefore perform a most useful function so we should eat plenty of these. In addition, they are full of folic acid, beta-carotene and vitamin C.

Many of the essential ingredients of the Mediterraean Diet have been mentioned above. Add things like figs, nuts, mushrooms and you have a complete armoury in the fight against cancer. The Mediterranean diet has been researched all over the world and results are unanimous in declaring that it is one of the healthiest diets on this planet. Why bother with fussy diets with difficult recipes when you can have easy, quick and tasty meals on your table by adopting this great diet.
